Netflix’s Emmy-winning drama Baby Reindeer is embroiled in a lawsuit. The streaming platform will face a defamation suit from a woman who was harassed because she was identified as a leading character in the series by internet sleuths who made her life miserable by trolling her. The US-based streaming platform billed the drama series as a “true story,” but the incidents depicted in the Emmy-winning drama were false narratives.
In a lawsuit, Fiona Harding claimed that the Netflix show told “brutal lies.” Over 500 million global web fans have viewed the drama series Baby Reindeer. It follows a female named Martha, identified as Fiona Harvey and trolled by many, stalking a male named Richard Gadd.
Ms Harvey said many incidents in the series didn’t happen in real life. Judge Gary Klausner mentioned the disparities in the series and said, “There’s a major difference between stalking and being convicted of stalking in a court of law.”
Netflix claimed that the things portrayed on the show were “substantially true.” Still, Ms. Harvey claimed that she did not stalk a police officer as shown in the series, nor did she sexually assault Gadd or violently attack him with a bottle or gouge his eyes and more.
The judge said that there were “major differences” between what happened and what was shown in real life, and the company had said, “This is a true story,” rather than saying that it was “based on a true story,” as Gadd had presented it.
Richard Gadd, the show’s creator, plays a character named Donny Dunn, who is based on his life story. He is stalked by a character called Martha Scott. Fiona Harvey said that the character was reportedly based on her, but many mischaracterizations had caused much damage to her life. She sued Netflix and launched a $170 million defamation suit against the streaming platform.
Although the judge ruled against Netflix’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit, violating publicity rights and punitive damages were denied. Harvey’s claim of intentional infliction of emotional distress has been upheld, and the case will go to trial in 2025.
