While the country concentrated on the elections, the pandemic grew rapidly across states and spread faster than ever, in a few states. Unfortunately, the US broke records that are unfavorable. On Wednesday, more than 100,000 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in a single day, for the first time as per the data from Johns Hopkins University. Just a day later on Thursday, this record was unfortunately shattered with a total of 121, 888 new cases. On Friday, a new record of 126,000 new cases was set. As on Saturday morning Johns Hopkins data reported more than 9.7 million cases in the US.
Hospitals were filled with cases and thousands died. “It’s everywhere,” Ohio governor Mike Dewine said on Thursday. “We can’t hide from it. We can’t run from it.”
“We know how to mitigate the spread of the virus. We know that masks work.” Kansas governor Laura Kelly said.
Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health wrote in a blog post that more than 130,000 lives could be saved if most Americans wore masks, calling it a “simple, selfless act.”
Many states and communities across the US are taking steps to fight the pandemic. In some cases, it means making hard decisions including the extension of COVID-19 restrictions or reinstating earlier restrictions. Interstate travel advisories have also been issued.
