UNTIL DAWN CWEB Official Cinema Trailer and Movie Review, Revives Horror Nostalgia with a Twisted Time-Loop Thriller

Sony Pictures

Director David F. Sandberg (Lights OutAnnabelle: Creation) is resurrecting the bone-chilling spirit of Supermassive Games’ cult classic with Until Dawn (2025), a cinematic reimagining of the 2015 interactive horror masterpiece. Rather than a straightforward adaptation, Sandberg and screenwriters Blair Butler (Hell Fest) and Gary Dauberman (ITThe Nun) craft a standalone nightmare that honors the game’s DNA—choices with deadly consequences—while injecting fresh, blood-soaked twists.

The Plot: A Loop of Terror
The film centers on Clover (Ella Rubin), a headstrong college student who rallies her friends—played by Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, and Belmont Cameli—to investigate the vanishing of her sister, Melanie, in the snow-locked peaks of Alberta. Their search leads them to an abandoned lodge, where they’re gruesomely slaughtered by a masked assailant… only to awaken hours earlier, trapped in a Groundhog Day-from-hell scenario. Each reset unleashes a new, increasingly grotesque killer (from spectral entities to deranged cultists), forcing the group to unravel clues, forge alliances, and outwit death before dawn breaks their curse.

Nods to the Game—and a Familiar Face
Fans of the original Until Dawn will relish Peter Stormare’s return as the enigmatic Dr. Hill, now reimagined as a cryptic park ranger who taunts the group with riddles about their fate. Sandberg peppers the film with Easter eggs, including a haunting rendition of the game’s iconic “Don’t Breathe” mechanic and a mid-credits tease hinting at ties to the Dark Pictures Anthology. Yet the film carves its own identity, swapping the Wendigo mythos for a lore-rich tapestry of occult rituals and time-bending vengeance.

Style & Substance
Sandberg’s flair for claustrophobic scares shines in set pieces that blend practical effects with dizzying CGI—think Happy Death Day meets The Thing. A standout sequence features the group fending off a axe-wielding maniac in a rotating funhouse mirror maze, their reflections fracturing alongside their sanity. Meanwhile, Dauberman’s script balances razor-sharp humor with existential dread, asking: How many times can you watch your friends die before you become the monster?

Early Buzz
Early test screenings praise Rubin’s star-making performance and Stormare’s scene-stealing menace, though purists debate whether the film’s linear narrative can replicate the game’s “butterfly effect” tension.

Still, with a reported $80 million budget—Sony’s biggest horror investment since JumanjiUntil Dawn aims to dominate the spring 2025 box office, flanked by IMAX screenings and a VR companion experience.

The Verdict
Until Dawn (2025) isn’t just a love letter to gamers—it’s a gateway to a new horror universe. Whether it sparks a franchise or becomes a cautionary tale about tampering with time, one thing’s certain: You’ll never look at snowfall the same way again.

Catch Until Dawn in theaters April 25, 2025. Stay tuned to CWEB News for exclusive cast interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.
