University of California halts plan to hire undocumented students. The University of California’s governing board warned that allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for jobs on any of its ten campuses would put the university and its students at “significant risk,” including the possibility of criminal prosecution. On Thursday, the governing board of the University of California postponed a decision on the matter.
Bloomberg Law reports, “California has been a leader in legislation benefiting undocumented residents, such as allowing them to obtain driver’s licenses. The state’s higher education system is now looking to be their largest employer by relying on an untested legal theory.”
The president of the University of California, Michael Drake, informed the board before the vote that the student work plan’s suggested legal route was “not viable right now” and that putting it into action would put the university and the people it serves at “significant risk.”

Regents who opposed the plan’s postponement expressed their dismay, describing it as a squandered chance for the university system to take the lead in defending the rights of foreign students lacking proper documentation.
“We are pausing at a crucial moment on an issue that requires our commitment,” said California assembly speaker emeritus and UC regent John A Pérez. “If you stand and say this is the time for us to be bold and take individual and institutional risks, then you speak to a different sense of moral authority.”
Over 4,000 undocumented students in the ten-campus system are now unable to work on campus, including those that require paid residencies and fellowships for them to graduate or seek further education, as a result of the decision.
USC president Michael Drake stated that more “experiential learning” opportunities will be one of the ways the institution looks for ways to help the students.
