As of Wednesday, the license between UMG and TikTok has expired.
UMG reported, “TikTok proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay.” “Ultimately, TikTok is trying to build a music-based business without paying fair value for the music.”
UMG also objected to what it called TikTok’s safety violations. UMG is not pleased with TikTok’s response to what it claims to be bullying, harassment, hate speech, and intolerance. It said that getting objectionable content taken down from TikTok is “monumentally onerous and inefficient, equating to the digital equivalent of “Whack-a-Mole.”
The banter between both UMG and TikTok continued. UMG retaliated, “As our negotiations continued, TikTok attempted to bully us into accepting a deal worth less than the previous deal, far less than fair market value and not reflective of their exponential growth,” “How did it try to intimidate us? By selectively removing the music of certain of our developing artists while keeping our audience-driving global stars on the platform.”
With the ability to incorporate music from major record label libraries into their videos, TikTok’s estimated 1.5 billion monthly users make it a significant player in the contemporary music industry. However, UMG announced early on Wednesday that it would remove the recordings due to songwriters’ and artists’ lack of payment.
