On October 9, 2024, Citigroup maintained its “Buy” rating for Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:UBER), with a recommendation to “hold” the stock. At that time, UBER’s stock price was $77.87. Uber, a leading player in the rideshare market, faces competition from companies like Lyft and potential new entrants like Tesla.
Tesla’s upcoming Robotaxi event on October 10 has the rideshare market on edge. Tesla plans to unveil a low-cost, fully autonomous vehicle, which could disrupt the business models of Uber and Lyft. Despite these concerns, JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth remains confident in Uber’s future, highlighting its strong position in the autonomous vehicle (AV) ecosystem.
The announcement of Tesla’s $25,000 robotaxi poses a direct challenge to Uber and Lyft. Tesla’s potential launch of a robotaxi ride-hailing app could make it a formidable competitor. Since Tesla’s initial robotaxi announcement in April, Uber’s valuation multiples have compressed, indicating pressure on the rideshare giant. However, Anmuth is cautious about how quickly Tesla’s vision will materialize.
Despite these challenges, UBER’s stock price has shown resilience. The current price of $77.87 reflects a 2.23% increase, or $1.70, from previous levels. Today, the stock has traded between $75.96 and $77.96. Over the past year, UBER has seen a high of $82.14 and a low of $40.09, with a market capitalization of approximately $163.6 billion.
Uber’s trading volume on the NYSE is 15,982,716 shares, indicating active investor interest. As highlighted by Citigroup’s “Buy” rating, there is confidence in Uber’s ability to navigate the challenges posed by Tesla’s robotaxi and maintain its position in the rideshare market.
