Tyrone Taylor’s blast powers Brewers past Padres

Tyrone Taylor greeted Padres reliever Craig Stammen with a three-run homer in the sixth inning Tuesday night to lead the visiting Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 victory in San Diego.

Right-hander Corbin Burnes (2-2) held the Padres to one run on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings to get the win over left-hander Blake Snell (0-2) in a matchup of former Cy Young Award winners.

Snell, who was making his second start of the season since coming off the injured list after recovering from an adductor strain, entered the sixth inning in a 1-1 deadlock with Burnes.

Andrew McCutchen drew a walk from Snell but was forced at second on Luis Urias’ grounder to third. Christian Yelich followed with a full-count single to left-center that sent Urias to second and drove Snell from the game.

Stammen, who hadn’t allowed an inherited runner to score since Opening Day, got ahead in the count on Taylor with two straight strikes. Taylor then drove Stammen’s 0-2 offering into the seats in left for his fourth homer of the season.

Snell, who won the 2018 American League Cy Young Award with Tampa Bay, was charged with two of the runs on Taylor’s homer and finished with a line of three runs allowed on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Burnes won the National League Cy Young Award in 2021.

The Padres opened the game with back-to-back singles by Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado. Cronenworth then scored when Jurickson Profar grounded into a double play.

Milwaukee, which was retired in order in six of the nine innings, tied the game at 1-1 when Mike Brosseau led off the fifth with his third homer — a towering blast that landed on the upper balcony of the Western Metal Supply Co. building in left field.

The Padres opened the seventh with back-to-back singles by Luke Voit and Ha-Seong Kim, bringing up Trent Grisham as the tying run with no one out. But reliever Hoby Milner turned a one-hopper back to the mound into a double play.

With Josh Hader away on emergency medical leave, Devin Williams earned his third save for the Brewers thanks to a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
