Six Memphis police officers have been fired since the night Tyre Nichols was kicked, pepper-sprayed, punched, and struck with a baton by those officers, and five of them have been charged with murder. High-profile incidents like the murder of George Floyd in 2020, which brought policing under scrutiny and made it a frequent target of protests and attempts to cut funding, have made the staffing crisis worse.
Sparse information has surfaced regarding the hiring and training of the five former officers facing murder charges, Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, and Desmond Mills Jr., in the weeks since authorities released video of Nichols’ brutal beating. The five men were part of a now-disbanded specialized street crime unit, the SCORPION unit, established less than a year ago as part of the city’s plan to deal with the violence that was on the rise. It focused on homicides, robberies, assaults, and other felonies. According to a federal lawsuit filed on Tuesday, the five charged in Nichols’ death are also accused of assaulting another young Black man just three days prior to the fatal police encounter.

The murder of Nichols, according to Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, raises concerns about “how those officers were trained, supervised,” and chosen. Cerelyn “CJ” Davis, the chief of the Memphis Police Department, told CNN last month that Nichols’ passing was a sign of “a gap somewhere” in the SCORPION unit.
In the lawsuit, the SCORPION unit, which is alleged to have operated like a “gang of vigilantes” without the necessary training or supervision, is accused of engaging in a pattern of policing abuses that the city failed to stop or address.
