A federal civil-rights complaint claims that one of the five former Memphis police officers accused of killing 29-year-old Tyre Nichols has a history of a prison assault in 2016.
Demetrius Haley, an ex-Memphis police officer, and another officer are accused of beating Cordarlrius Sledge, who was serving a three-year sentence for aggravated assault on May 16, 2015. At the time, Haley worked as a corrections officer for the Shelby County Corrections Department.
Demetrius Haley was one of three corrections officers who are alleged to have assaulted Cordarlrius Sledge while he was imprisoned in Shelby County, according to the complaint filed in April 2016 in U.S. District Court in Tennessee.
Sledge brought the lawsuit, alleging that two officers had struck him in the face in an allegedly random pop-in search. He claimed that a third guard punched him face-first into a sink and that “Haley was the most vicious.”
Sledge claimed that after being taken to the prison’s medical facility, he passed out and woke up the next morning on a bed with blood pouring out of his ear. He said he has been permanently damaged in the right ear. He noted that the prison warden had offered him an apology, but Haley offered none.
Allegations that Haley assaulted Sledge while he was incarcerated were refuted in court documents, and the lawsuit was dismissed in 2018 before its merits could be considered because Sledge failed to provide the court with the required information.
A judge found that he had not properly served a summons on one of the defendants.
Sledge explained that because he was being held by the federal government at the time, he was unable to complete the required paperwork on his own.
The 29-year-old victim passed away in a Memphis hospital on January 10, three days after police stopped his car, local police and Benjamin Crump, a lawyer for his family, said. According to his family, he was severely beaten to death. The FedEx employee leaves behind a four-year-old son.

The Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods (Scorpion) unit, where the five officers accused of killing Nichols were stationed, has reportedly been permanently deactivated, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Police leadership experts and veterans said That the errors and aggressive behaviors in the way Memphis officers handled Nichols are components of American police culture, and not Memphis mistakes or mistakes made by Black police officers.
After Tyre Nichols was fatally beaten by police, three Democratic state legislators in Tennessee promised on Saturday that legislation for police reform would be introduced.
