The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation said that two Wisconsin police officers were murdered on Saturday during a gunfight with a suspect during a traffic check in Cameron. (DCI). According to a news statement from the authorities, the cops were from two different police departments.
At approximately 3:38 p.m. Saturday, Chetek Police Officer Emily Breidenbach, 35, and Cameron Police Officer Hunter Scheel, 23, conducted a traffic stop in Cameron, Wisconsin. They did so based on a warrant and to check the welfare of Perry, the driver, after they received a report of concerning behavior. A shootout commenced between the officers and the driver, the Wisconsin DOJ said. At the scene, Breidenbach and Scheel were pronounced dead, while Perry was taken to the hospital. He died later.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul and Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers have expressed grief and offered their condolences on Sunday to the family and friends of the officers. According to the Wisconsin DOJ, DCI oversees the case’s investigation and is collaborating with the sheriff’s offices of Barron and Rusk counties, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. Once it has completed its investigation, DCI will report its findings to the Barron County District Attorney, according to officials.
Breidenbach has worked for the Chetek Police Department since 2019 and has been K9 Officer Grizz’s handler. According to the department press release, her compassion for “the community and the children of the community of Chetek was remarkable.”
Scheel served in the Army National Guard for six years before joining the Cameron Police Department in 2022. The announcement stated that Hunter was “a dedicated officer and was very passionate about his job.”
According to authorities, the two police officers’ bodies were brought to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday morning for autopsy. As their slain sister and brother were being brought to the Twin Cities for autopsies on Monday morning, numerous deputies, and police officers from all around St. Croix County gathered in St. Croix Falls to pay their condolences.
