On January 15, two men who were charged in connection with the rape of Louisiana State University student Madison Brooks were released from custody. 18-year-old Casen Carver, and 28-year-old Everett Lee were each accused of taking part in or allegedly witnessing the rape. Lee and Carver were released on a $75,000 and $50,000 bond, respectively. They will continue to be under house arrest with ankle monitors.
Kaivon Washington and a 17-year-old who has not been identified remain in custody. Washington was given a $150,000 bond, and the minor remains in juvenile detention as his pre-trial bond hearing was postponed to February. Both are reportedly charged with third-degree rape.
On January 15, Madison Brooks was killed when a ride-share car struck her as she was crossing a dark street in Baton Rouge. At the time of her death, Brooks’ blood alcohol content was four times the legal limit. Since then, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office has detained the four men for allegedly raping Brooks or witnessing a rape before dropping her off close to the accident scene.
The victim and the four suspects allegedly met at a bar on January 14 before the victim allegedly requested that they drop her off. Authorities were informed by Carver that Washington and the unnamed minor asked the victim to have sex with them despite the fact that she admitted to being drunk, stumbling, and mumbling her words. He also claimed that before the 17-year-old had sex with the victim in the back of the car, Madi gave him her “verbal consent” five times. Washington then switched places with the teen to have sex with the victim. The men left her in a neighborhood close to Pelican Lakes Parkway after the assault.
Video of the alleged sexual assault, according to the defense attorney for two men accused of rape, shows that she was in a “coherent state” and gave her consent.
Ron Haley, a lawyer for Washington and the minor, has disputed the accusations, saying that although the incident’s video clearly showed Brooks “was intoxicated,” it did not indicate that she was unable to “lawfully give consent or answer questions” while having sex with the suspects. She got out of the car after an “argument,” according to Haley.
This is the second collision to occur on Burbank Drive that has resulted in death and raises concerns about the area’s safety.
