For Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, the first crewed flight was a success the third time. The Atlas 5 rocket exploded off pad 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, commencing a mission lasting more than a week, for NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, following two unsuccessful launch attempts on May 6 and June 1.
At 10:52 a.m. EDT (1452 UTC) on June 5, Boeing’s Starliner spaceship finally flew its first crewed flight, ending years of delays and difficulties. Around 31 minutes into the mission, the spacecraft executed its orbital insertion fire. At T+1 hour and fifteen minutes into the mission, it performed another burn to circularize its orbit.
In a statement, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson stated that two courageous astronauts are underway on the first test flight of a brand-new spaceship. A new era in American exploration begins with Boeing’s Starliner.

The Crew Flight Test of Starliner takes place almost four years after SpaceX sent its Crew Dragon spaceship on its inaugural crew missions. As part of the Commercial Crew Program, NASA awarded both firms multi-billion dollar contracts to supply astronaut transporters.
In the thirteen flights following the lunch break of the Demo-2 mission, SpaceX sent almost fifty people into orbit, twelve of which docked with the International Space Station. After losing over a billion dollars due to a slew of technical problems, Boeing is finally getting back on track after a lengthy delay.
