A recent report stated that social media platform Twitter that is headed by Elon Musk will introduce its new verification process after the midterm elections in the U.S. There have been updates about the changes that will be implemented after the takeover by Musk, who is currently the only member in the board, after his $44 billion takeover and mass firings of board members, executives and staff.
The New York Times reviewed an internal post about concerns from staff and others that people could pay and misuse the paid feature. The news was also confirmed by sources familiar with the matter, although Twitter has not responded when asked for comment by several outlets.
For example, people would blue ticks could impersonate public figures, say that they were a particular political person and spread misinformation. Twitter has already seen hate posts jump by several hundred percent after it was taken over by Elon Musk, who is a self described advocate of free speech. Some comedians also temporarily impersonated Elon Musk to show the flaws in the system. One posted support for Democratic members before reverting to their original name.
Earlier, Elon Musk tweeted that he planned to give “power to the people” through an $8 verification process through Twitter Blue for anyone who is willing to pay for the service. In its earlier avatar, the blue tick was given to verified accounts of celebrities, the press and media, companies and other public figures.
As of Saturday, the updated App Store listing said that it would be available for anyone on the platform, after a verification process was implemented.
The Times reported that a Twitter employee had questioned why the social media platform wanted to make “such a risky change before elections, which has the potential of causing election interference.”
A manager replied on Slack that the project had been pushed back and would be launched on November 9, the day after the midterms.
However, this new date could also lead to election interference as several reports say that the counting of votes could taken even up to a month in certain states in the U.S. The potential for paid verification, without robust security measures in place, might backfire on Twitter.
Several major U.S. companies have temporarily suspended their paid advertisements on Twitter. Elon Musk tweeted about naming these companies and some of his followers spoke of boycotting them, which would become unsustainable both in the long and short run.
Some companies who have paused advertisements provide essential services, unlike Twitter, which is a social media platform. It is neither an essential or necessary service nor is it an exclusive service that sustains the world. Some celebrities have already left Twitter and have joined other platforms. This could turn out to be a loss for Twitter and a gain for other social media platforms, which would most probably welcome these celebrity stars and public figures.
