Tuberculosis regains top spot as global infectious disease killer, WHO, CDC publish reports, CWEB reports

Tuberculosis cases have been rising worldwide. The infectious disease has once again become the top disease, killing the largest number of people across continents. The World Health Organization (WHO) released its Global Tuberculosis Report, highlighting mixed progress. One of the major challenges that impede progress is underfunding. The CDC released the US report.

The WHO’s Global Tuberculosis Report reported a fall in deaths in 2023. The report said that 1.25 million died after getting infected with tuberculosis in 2023, compared to 1.32 million deaths reported a year ago. However, the number of people who fell ill with TB increased and was estimated to be 10.8 million in 2023.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published provisional 2023 U.S. TB data. The data indicated a rise in cases of TB across the nation in 2023 and listed the reasons for the continued increase in cases.

The CDC said, “Continued recovery from pandemic-related health care disruption, global increases in TB, and increase in post-pandemic travel and migration are likely contributing to these increases” and more.

The CDC describes Tuberculosis on its website as a disease caused by germs spread from person to person through the air. Mycobacterium tuberculosis can attack any part of the body, although it generally attacks the lungs.

Major symptoms include coughing, pain in the chest, and, in some cases, blood. Tuberculosis is a treatable disease, and both active and inactive forms can be treated. People can be tested for tuberculosis using a blood or skin test.

Those who have active TB have to take medicines and isolate themselves to prevent the spread of the disease. Those who have inactive TB also have to be treated to prevent it from becoming active TB.

Tuberculosis is a treatable disease. However, if vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, and the elderly are not treated, the disease can prove to be fatal.
