President Donald Trump has given Elon Musk approval to close down the federal agency United States Agency for International Development (USAID). On Monday, the website showed an error message that indicated that it had been shut down. It reportedly went offline on Saturday. Earlier, over the weekend engineers from DOGE led by Musk gained access to information that was earlier denied to them by senior officials.

Late last week the Trump administration placed two security chiefs from the agency on leave. They had reportedly denied access to the DOGE team as they did not have sufficient security clearances. Later the team gained access to information from the agency over the weekend.

Elon Musk posted about USAID on his social media platform X. He said that Trump had “agreed” with him on shutting down the agency. In multiple posts he described it as a “criminal agency” and more. Earlier he also said, “Time for it to die” and more.

President Donald Trump also commented on USAID over the weekend. He said that it has “been run by a bunch of radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out…and then we’ll make a decision.”

Some officials suggested that USAID could be added to the State Department as it is no longer an independent federal agency.

On Sunday night Trump once again affirmed his support for Elon Musk. He said that although he had disagreements with Musk, he thought that he was “doing a good job.”

Trump also said that his billionaire buddy was “very smart” and was looking to “cut the federal budget” as his DOGE continued to cut costs across agencies.

Earlier the Trump Administration and the Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed a freeze on foreign assistance. This impacted USAID as the agency works with more than 100 countries around the world.

Team members from DOGE have also gained access to sensitive information such as Social Security and Medicare customer payment systems from the Treasury Department.
