In a move to foster greater diversity and inclusivity in media coverage, President Donald Trump’s Pentagon has announced a new media rotation program that will provide fresh opportunities for news organizations to report from within the Department of Defense headquarters. According to a memo released late Friday, the initiative will see several outlets, including The New York Times, rotate out of their dedicated office spaces to make room for other media organizations.
The “New Annual Media Rotation Programme” will require The New York Times, National Public Radio (NPR), NBC News, and Politico to vacate their Pentagon offices by February 14. In their place, the Pentagon will welcome The New York Post, One America News Network (OANN), Breitbart News Network, and HuffPost News into dedicated workspaces. The rotation will occur annually, with one outlet from print, online, television, and radio being replaced by a new organization from the same medium.
The memo emphasized that the program is designed to “allow a new outlet from the same medium that has not had the unique opportunity to report as a resident member of the Pentagon Press Corps.” This initiative aims to ensure that a broader range of voices and perspectives can contribute to the coverage of the U.S. military’s activities.
John Ullyot, acting assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs, clarified that the outlets being rotated out will remain full members of the Pentagon Press Corps. “The only change will be giving up their physical workspaces in the building to allow new outlets to have their turn to become resident members,” he said. “This is about creating opportunities for more organizations to participate in this important work.”
The decision has been met with understanding by some, who see it as a fair and balanced approach to media access. NBC News, while expressing disappointment over losing access to a broadcasting booth it has used for decades, acknowledged the importance of providing opportunities for other outlets.
More than two dozen news organizations currently operate out of the Pentagon, including Reuters, covering the daily activities of the U.S. military. The new rotation program reflects the Pentagon’s commitment to ensuring that various media outlets can contribute to the public’s understanding of military operations and policies.
As the February 14 deadline approaches, the media landscape at the Pentagon is set to evolve, offering new opportunities for organizations to engage with the Department of Defense. CWEB Reports highlights this initiative as a positive step toward expanding media access and fostering a more inclusive press corps.
The program underscores the Pentagon’s dedication to transparency and its belief in the value of diverse perspectives in reporting. CWEB Reports will continue to follow this development, celebrating the increased opportunities for media organizations to contribute to the vital work of informing the public.
