Zach Edey scored a career-high 32 points, including the game-winning basket with 2.2 seconds left, and No. 3 Purdue edged Michigan State 64-63 on Monday afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
Edey also grabbed 17 rebounds as the Boilermakers (17-1, 6-1 Big Ten) retained sole possession of first place in the conference. Freshman Fletcher Loyer had 17 points. Tyson Walker led the Spartans (12-6, 4-3) with 30 points. A.J. Hoggard had 14 points and eight assists and Joey Hauser added 10 points.
In a game with 13 lead changes and eight ties, Caleb Furst and Walker traded corner 3-pointers in the final 4:15 before Loyer scored a three-point play and layup to give Purdue a 58-57 edge. Walker’s layup with 2:19 left put the Spartans back on top.
Walker then answered two Loyer free throws with a long 2-pointer for a 61-60 Spartans advantage. Loyer made two free throws with 32 seconds left to give Purdue the lead. Walker pulled up and hit a midrange jumper with 12 seconds left to give the Spartans a one-point advantage before Loyer set up Edey for the game-winning layup.
No. 18 Charleston 82, William & Mary 54
Ante Brzovic scored 17 points and the Cougars won their 18th game in a row by blasting the Tribe in Charleston, S.C.
Dalton Bolon had 15 points, Reyne Smith posted 13 points and Ben Burnham came off the bench for 13 points for the Cougars (19-1, 7-0 Colonial Athletic Association). Charleston made 16 shots from 3-point range, while the Tribe missed all of their 12 attempts from beyond the arc.
Ben Wight had 14 points for William & Mary (8-11, 3-3), which was unable to come anywhere close to duplicating its road upset from two days earlier at UNC Wilmington. Anders Nelson had 12 points and Noah Collier had 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the Tribe were hurt by 18 turnovers.
No. 24 Florida Atlantic 76, Western Kentucky 62
After earning their first-ever Associated Press Top 25 ranking in program history, the Owls continued to show why they were deserving with a victory over the Hilltoppers at Bowling Green, Ky.
Nick Boyd had 16 points, and Alijah Martin added 15 points and five rebounds for the Owls (17-1, 7-0 Conference USA), who won their school-record 16th straight game and remained Conference USA’s lone unbeaten team in league play.
Western Kentucky (11-7, 3-4), which ended a three-game winning streak, was led by Dayvion McKnight, who had team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Jordan Rawls added 13 points and four assists, while Luke Frampton added 11 points.
No. 17 Miami 82, Syracuse 78
Nijel Pack made five 3-pointers — some of them from several feet beyond the line — and Norchad Omier had a double-double as the Hurricanes defeated the visiting Orange in an ACC game.
Miami (15-3, 6-2 ACC) rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit and improved to 11-0 at home this season.
Syracuse (12-7, 5-3) had a chance to tie the score with 10.7 seconds left. Freshman point guard Judah Mintz drove the lane but his layup was stuffed by Omier, who finished with 16 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Omier was fouled and made two key free throws. Jesse Edwards had a game- and career-high 25 points with 11 rebounds for Syracuse, which is 9-3 in its past 12 games.
