Whether he wears a Spider Man suit or not, Tom Holland has shown that he can carry a movie to the top of the box office. His latest action adventure “Unchartered” is expected to gross more that $51 million in its long opening day weekend, which is Presidents’ Day weekend. On Friday, Sony Pictures said that the movie would gross about $44.2 million Friday to Sunday.
This opening puts “Unchartered” at the No. 1 position for the week. There is finally some positive anticipation after another of Holland’s movie Spider-Man: No Way Home had one of the biggest opening weekend, some time back. Another new opener “Dog” has also done modestly and is at the No. 2 position. The industry is heaving a sense of relief as the final toll of the pandemic finally seems to be receding.
Josh Greenstein, the President of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group said that the result reinforced what Sony bet on which is that audiences have an “appetite for the theatrical experience.”
“Uncharted” stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg along with Antonio Banderas and Sophia Ali. It is directed by Ruben Fleischer. It is based on a game that is popular on Sony PlayStation and there was some uncertainty whether audiences would go the theaters to see the film. However, it appears that they have, after the movie opened on 4,275 screens.
Paul Dergarabedian, who is a senior analyst at Comscore believes that Tom Holland is a megastar. So, it doesn’t matter whether he plays Peter Parker in “Spider-Man” franchise or Nathan Drake in “Unchartered.” He delivers a hit with his performance.
“Unchartered” has had a good start at the box office but it must be remembered that it has been a big budget film at $120 million. It has topped $100 million globally and will be released in China, in March, which could further boost sales.
