On Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping embarked on their first in-person meeting in over a year. During the discussions, which have far-reaching consequences for a global community battling economic crosscurrents and wars in the Middle East and Europe, the two leaders pledged to work toward stabilizing tense relations.
“Mr. President, it has been a very long time since we first met. Nobody is surprised by the fact that we have not consistently reached an agreement. However, we have always found our meetings to be candid, forthright, and fruitful,” Biden said prior to the bilateral meeting of the two leaders.
“Your candidness in communication has never caused me to question what you have told me.” Biden continued, “I value our conversation because I believe it is crucial that we have a clear understanding of one another as leaders, with no misunderstandings or miscommunication.”
In the interim, delegates from twenty-one APEC member economies are expected to convene for the APEC summit, which will focus on establishing a “sustainable” and “resilient” future for all. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida are among the participants.
APEC, an alliance of Pacific Rim nations established in 1989, comprises more than 60 percent of the global economy, 40 percent of global commerce, and nearly half of the global population. In 2011, the United States last hosted the APEC summit in Honolulu.
