Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson has been handed a one-game suspension by Major League Baseball in addition to an undisclosed fine, the league announced Friday.

The punishment came down in the wake of the veteran flashing an obscene gesture toward Cleveland fans during Chicago’s 2-1 loss at the Cleveland Guardians in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday.

The suspension was scheduled to be enacted for Friday night’s series-opening game on the road against the Minnesota Twins, but Anderson has elected to appeal, putting the suspension on hold.

Anderson, 28, was a first-time All-Star in 2021, when he batted .309 with 17 homes runs and 61 RBIs.

Earlier this season, Anderson served out a two-game suspension to start the year following a 2021 end-of-season incident involving him making contact with an umpire during a bench-clearing incident vs. the Detroit Tigers Sept. 27.
