Three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas saw her dream to make the U.S. gymnastics team end on Wednesday when she withdrew from this week’s national championships due to an ankle injury.
Douglas, 28, sustained the injury during training this week for the event in Fort Worth, Texas.
Douglas famously won the all-around gold medal in 2012 at London at age 16. She was the first Black woman to win the Olympic all-around title.
Douglas also earned gold medals for the U.S. in team competition in 2012 and 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
Pulling out of this week’s event prevents Douglas from trying to earn a spot in the 2024 Olympic Trials, scheduled for June 27-30 in Minneapolis. This year’s Olympics are in Paris.
Douglas didn’t try to make the 2020 U.S. team that eventually competed in 2021 at Tokyo. She returned to competition earlier this year.
Douglas told ESPN she will attempt to earn a spot in the 2028 Games at Los Angeles.
“I love this sport and I love pushing my limits,” Douglas said. “I hope I can inspire both my peers and the next generation of gymnasts that age is just a number, and you can accomplish anything you work hard for.”
Women’s competition in Fort Worth is Friday through Sunday. Past gold medal winners Simone Biles (2016) and Suni Lee (2021) are part of the field. Biles is seeking her ninth U.S. all-around title.
