Late Friday, the local prosecutor’s office in the state of Baja, California, in Mexico, said that three bodies had been found at a location close to where one American and two Australians were reported missing. The statement also said that a state laboratory was conducting a forensic examination of the remains to make an identification. The FBI and Australian authorities said they were in contact with the Mexican authorities.
Three men, American Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, and Australian brothers Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, were travelers who went on a surfing and camping vacation near Ensenada. The town is a popular tourist destination located about 90 minutes away from the border between the US and Mexico. According to the state prosecutor’s office in Baja California, they were last seen on April 27.
The travelers were documenting their trip on social media till Saturday, following which there were no posts. They were also expected to report at an Airbnb but failed to arrive there. The mother of the Australian brothers reported them missing on Wednesday and posted on social media when she had not heard from them for four days.
Earlier on Thursday, state prosecutor Socorro Ibarra said that her office was investigating three people in connection with the disappearance of the tourists. On Friday, she said that her office had obtained arrest warrants for the crime of forced disappearance.
Ibarra also said that the surfers had disappeared before the formal report of their missing was made. The authorities found tents in the areas where the three tourists were last seen. They also found a burnt white pickup truck in the vicinity, which the three travelers reportedly used, and a cell phone that belonged to one of them.
Baja California is known for its big waves, and many tourists and surfers come to surf there. However, it has also seen rising crime rates over the past two decades. Warnings have been issued about traveling to some parts of the country.
