Thomas Sorber, Georgetown hang on to beat lowly Seton Hall

Back in his home state, Georgetown freshman center Thomas Sorber had 19 points and eight rebounds and the Hoyas survived a late push in a 61-60 win at Seton Hall Sunday night in Newark, N.J.

After trailing by 11 with 3:48 left, Seton Hall went on a 10-0 run and had the ball with 10.2 seconds left and a chance to win it. After a timeout, Dylan Addae-Wusu brought the ball up court for the Pirates. He looked for Isaiah Coleman on the wing, but he was guarded by Curtis Williams Jr.

Addae-Wusu drove inside the arc and Sorber switched out on him. Addae-Wusu lost the dribble and Sorber stole it at the buzzer.

With the win, Georgetown (10-2, 2-0 Big East) surpassed its win total from last season. The Pirates (5-8, 0-2), who only shot 29.9 percent Sunday, have lost four in a row. The win also snapped a seven-game losing streak for Georgetown against Seton Hall.

Coleman had a game-high 25 points for Seton Hall. The Pirates never led.

Georgetown opened the game with a 14-3 burst as Seton Hall started the game 1-for-9 from the floor. The lead grew to 23-11 when Jayden Epps converted on a drive.

Sorber was born in Trenton, but played his high school basketball in nearby Philadelphia. He was too good for the Pirates in the low post, especially in the first half, when he had 13 points.

Late in the first half there was an odd moment with the officials. With 1:19 left, Seton Hall guard Chaunce Jenkins went to the line for a one-and-one and missed the first shot, but no one reacted to the rebound. After huddling, officials ruled a jump ball and the arrow gave it to Georgetown.

On their next possession, Jayden Epps was fouled and given two shots because Seton Hall was in the double bonus, but this time, officials mistakenly said it was a one-and-one and when he missed the first shot the Pirates pulled down the ball. Again, officials conferred and gave Epps his second free throw.

Epps finished with 15 points and Micah Peavy added 10 for the Hoyas, who shot 53.5 percent from the floor.
