The narrative of The Zone of Interest commences on a delightful afternoon in an unspecified location in the Polish countryside.
Glazer and his cinematographer, Lukasz Zal, filmed the movie on-site near the camp, using a painstakingly accurate reproduction of the Hösses’ actual residence. The inconspicuous little cameras rendered them invisible to the performers, resulting in a substantial portion of the visual content possessing an unsettling resemblance to surveillance footage, meticulously monitoring the characters from a detached and objective standpoint.
A married couple is having a picnic by the riverside with their five offspring. They have lunch and then frolic in the sunlight. The scene appears serene and enticing. However, there is a noticeable sense of something wrong after the family returns home.
In 1943, this family resided near the Auschwitz concentration camp. Christian Friedel delivers a chillingly quiet performance as the husband, portraying Rudolf Höss, the camp commander who is renowned for transforming Auschwitz into the most proficient instrument of mass murder during the Holocaust.
“The Zone of Interest” is a straightforward piece of storytelling: it is structured with calmness, tightly regulated, and focused on proving one essential irony—the proximity of regular lives to a chaotic abundance of death. Glazer accomplishes his intended goals, and one must appreciate his determination, expertise, and diplomacy.
