“The Year Between,” a drama centered around mental illness, will feature famous actors J. Smith-Cameron and Steve Buscemi, both known for their roles in “Succession.” This film is the first venture into feature writing and directing for comedian Alex Heller.
The film tells the narrative of Clemence, a 20-year-old woman with bipolar disorder. In the very first scene of “The Year Between,” she relocates to her family’s modest Illinois town, receives a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and embarks on an uncertain journey to determine the optimal combination of meds and lifestyle decisions that may restore her equilibrium.
Unfazed by obstacles, Clemence initiates regular meetings with a psychotherapist (Odom) and secures a part-time position at a thrift store. She establishes a tense relationship with her co-worker Beth (Simone) and successfully maintains abstinence from alcohol and illegal substances. Nevertheless, as Clemence reconnects with her former partying companion, Ashik (Jacob), she starts to endanger her advancement and faces the possibility of losing the little encouragement she still has.
This comedy-drama is expected to be particularly valued and deeply comprehended by individuals who experience mild to severe mental illness. Although many actions exhibited by Clemence are characteristic of bipolar disease, her behaviors and feelings are highly relatable. Equally similar are the early uninformed reactions of her relatives towards her condition.
