Movie Review: The Silent Hour
Sixteen months after an on-the-job accident leaves him with hearing loss, Boston Detective Frank Shaw (Joel Kinnaman) returns to duty. Teaming up with his partner, played by Mark Strong, they are thrust into a dangerous situation involving Ava Fremont (Sandra Mae Frank), a deaf witness to a brutal gang murder. Ava resides in a vulnerable, soon-to-be-condemned apartment building, setting the backdrop for a tense and claustrophobic standoff.
The antagonist, Lynch (Mekhi Phifer), leads a team of corrupt cops determined to eliminate Ava to prevent her from testifying. As the killers close in, Shaw and Fremont must rely on their wits and newfound communication methods to outsmart the relentless assailants. The film effectively uses the apartment complex’s isolation to heighten suspense, creating a sense of urgency and danger.
Joel Kinnaman delivers a compelling performance as Shaw, balancing vulnerability with tenacity. Sandra Mae Frank shines as Ava, bringing depth and authenticity to her role. The dynamic between the two characters evolves naturally, showcasing their growing trust and dependence on each other.
