Frogmore Cottage is a historic residence located within the Frogmore estate in Windsor, England. In early 2020, it was announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would step back as senior members of the Royal Family and would no longer use Frogmore Cottage as their official residence. The cottage remains owned by the Crown Estate and reportedly now being offered to Prince Andrew.
The cottage was built in the 18th century and has served as a royal residence for several members of the British Royal Family.
In 2018, Frogmore Cottage underwent a major renovation to become the new home of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The couple moved in shortly before the birth of their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, in May 2019.
The BBC said that the estate, which has ten bedrooms and was gifted to the couple by the late queen, was renovated for them with the intention that it would serve as their primary abode.
They claimed to have paid back more than $3 million in taxpayer funds used to renovate the house in 2020. When the couple decided to resign from their roles as royals, one of the criticisms was the Frogmore renovations.
In January 2020, the couple announced that they would be stepping back from their roles as senior members of the royal family and would be splitting their time between the United Kingdom and North America. The decision, which became known as “Megxit,” sparked controversy and media attention. Since then, the couple has been involved in various business and philanthropic ventures, including launching their own media production company, Archewell Productions.
In May 2018, Prince Harry married American actress Meghan Markle in a highly publicized wedding ceremony. The couple has two children, a son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, born in May 2019, and a daughter named Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, born in June 2021.
