A jury has sentenced the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooter, who carried out a horrible act of terror on innocent worshipers in 2018, to death in a historic and significant judgment. This historic decision not only gives the victims and their families a sense of justice, but it also sends a strong statement against the racism and hate crimes that have afflicted our society for far too long.
Now 50 years old, Robert Bowers, a truck driver entered the Tree of Life synagogue, and opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, shooting everyone he could find in a mass murder clearly motivated by religious hatred. On October 27, 2018, the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, witnessed one of the deadliest anti-Semitic attacks in American history. The shooter, filled with hatred and prejudice, opened fire on congregants during their Shabbat morning service, killing eleven people and injuring several others. The attack sent shockwaves throughout the nation and highlighted the alarming rise of hate crimes targeting religious communities.
To be sentenced to death in a federal capital case, a defendant must receive a unanimous verdict from the jury during a separate penalty phase. Judges are not allowed to overturn jury verdicts. The criminal is instead condemned to life in prison without the possibility of parole if the jury cannot come to a majority verdict.
The same jury that found Bowers guilty on sixty-three felony charges on Wednesday advocated for his execution.
