The Night Agent S2 (9/10)

By Tony Medley

10 Episodes, Netflix.

TV-MA.

The second season of The Night Agent is even better than the first, and that’s saying a lot. Based on the 2019 novel by Matthew Quirk, according to Parrot Analytics, its 2023 showing resulted in $67.7 million in global subscriber revenue for the second quarter making it Netflix’s top revenue contributor globally, ”outperforming major titles.”

Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) returns as a vastly more experienced agent for a fictional arm of U.S. intelligence services called “Night Acton,” going rogue after the harrowing first season. His love interest, Rose (Luciane Buchanan) assumes a more active role in his dilemma. And his handler, Catherine (Amanda Warren) joins in fighting the dangers despite an apparent mole who seems to be betraying them.

Added this season is Noor (Amanda Warren), an Iranian woman who becomes a reluctant ally as she is manipulated by Peter and Catherine over her worries about the welfare of her family in Iran. Noor’s presence in the mansion of the Iranian Ambassador to the U.N. gives the tale a frightening location for Noor to become an amateur spy to get incriminating papers in the Mansion in scenes pulsating with tension.

Noor’s presence and concern about her family adds a compelling B story to that of Peter, who is burdened by suspicions about his trustworthiness due to the allegations that his father was accused of being responsible for a major leak from the Pentagon.

Embedded in the tale are the romantic relationship between Peter and Rose, and the dubious trust between Peter and Catherine. Added is a welcome line examining the morality of lying, which creates a problem in Rose and Peter’s relationship.

There are some sophisticated technological techniques used by all the parties that strain credulity. But this is fiction, so what’s wrong with that? And they could be accurate, given the vast reaches of today’s technology.
