According to The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times is suing Microsoft and OpenAI for copyright violations about their artificial intelligence technology. The New York Times claims in a complaint submitted on Wednesday that OpenAI and Microsoft, the parent company of LinkedIn, “exploited” its content without permission to develop their AI products, such as Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT.
Millions of NYT articles are allegedly used without authorization to train advanced large language models (LLMs), such as GPT. Positioned at the nexus of artificial intelligence and intellectual property rights, this action poses important queries regarding the acceptable bounds of AI within the framework of copyright.
According to the lawsuit, the apps were trained “on millions of pieces of Times content” to assist them in coming up with responses when users ask them questions. Microsoft and OpenAI have not yet responded to the accusations. The NYT’s main accusation is that OpenAI routinely duplicated large amounts of its information to create AI models. In addition to unauthorized copying, the lawsuit alleges that this approach may have jeopardized the NYT’s economic model by drawing readers and money away from its content.
CNBC reported,” The publisher said in a filing in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York that it seeks to hold Microsoft and OpenAI to account for the “billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages” it believes it is owed for the “unlawful copying and use of The Times’s uniquely valuable works.”
