A new study has revealed the states where the highest percentage of citizens over the age of 65 are killed in road accidents.
The overall number of over-65s who died in crashes in the US between 2017 and 2021 amounts to an overwhelming 65,291, making it the age bracket with the second-highest amount of road fatalities, with 25–30s taking the top spot with 67,211 deaths.
Research carried out by personal injury law firm Bader Scott analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from 2017 to 2021 to determine which states have the highest percentage of elderly deaths in road accidents.

Maine has a total of 1,538 deaths due to road accidents, with older drivers representing 378 of these; over 65s experienced the highest number of fatalities in this state compared to other age groups.
In second place is New York, which experienced a staggering 10,706 road accident deaths in total; over 65s makeup 23.30% of this, with 2,494 elderly deaths overall—the second highest ratio in the country.
Rhode Island ranks third, with drivers over the age of 65 representing 22.94% of road accident fatalities. Due to its smaller population, Rhode Island had a comparatively low number of total road accident deaths, with just 606 overall; however, people over the age of 65 accounted for 139 of these fatalities.
In joint fourth place are New Jersey and Massachusetts, where people aged over 65 made up 22.84% of road accident fatalities. New Jersey saw a total of 5,880 deaths, with a shocking 1,343 of these people being over the age of 65—this age group has a significantly higher rate of deaths than any other age range within the state. In Massachusetts, out of 3,617 road accident fatalities, 826 of these deaths were among citizens over 65.
Vermont comes in fifth place, with drivers over the age of 65 contributing to 22.10% of road fatalities. The state has just 629 deaths in total, but 139 deaths are over 65 years of age – this being more deaths than any other age bracket in the state.
In sixth place is Minnesota, with 22.00% of road accident deaths involving people over the age of 65. With an overall death toll for road accidents of 3,931, older drivers make up a staggering 865 deaths.

Coming in at eighth is New Hampshire, with over 65-year-olds making up 21.72% of road accident fatalities. The state has an overall road death toll of 1,160, with 225 of these deaths being over the age of 65.
In ninth place is Kansas, where 21.11% of their road accident fatalities involve drivers over the age of 65. Kansas has a total of 4,050 road fatalities, and older drivers contribute to 855 of these.
Placing tenth is Oregon, where older drivers account for 20.84% of road fatalities. Out of 4,491 total road accident deaths, 936 involved drivers aged 65 and over.
Louisiana is the safest state for older drivers, with drivers aged 65 and over accounting for only 13.57% of deaths from crashes.
Seth Bader, from Bader Scott commented on the findings: “Older drivers, defined as citizens over the age of 65 in this study, are some of the most at-risk age groups on the roads. As you increase with age, driving can become more challenging due to certain health aspects like a decrease in vision quality and slower reaction times. It is crucial that if you are planning on driving on the roads, you are taking the correct precautions and staying vigilant of other drivers.”
