Following their declaration that they were in “lockstep” regarding the need to continue applying pressure to Russia over its war with Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz conferred in private for more than an hour on Friday in the Oval Office.
Germany’s main trading partner is China, and European countries have typically been less aggressive toward Beijing than the United States. Even so, there are indications that things may be changing as tensions between nations increase.
Scholz urged China to “use your power in Moscow to push for the withdrawal of Russian troops and do not supply weapons to the aggressor Russia” in a speech to the German parliament on Thursday.
Scholz stated that Western allies would back Ukraine for “as long as it takes” during brief remarks to the public on Friday.
The question of whether Europe will join Washington in imposing sanctions on China in the event that it ships weapons to Russia is a topic of discussion between President Biden and Chancellor Scholz as well as with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will be in town next week.
Beijing’s cost-benefit analysis will determine whether the conversations are effective, according to Liana Fix, fellow for Europe at the Council on Foreign Relations. How convinced Beijing is that Europeans are serious about implementing U.S. sanctions are particularly important.
