In this powerful drama, based on a true story, Angus Benfield stars as George Eshleman, an Army veteran deeply affected by the suicides of his fellow service members. Driven by a mission to raise awareness about this tragic epidemic, George embarks on an arduous journey to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. He carries with him 363 name tapes, each representing a military member who took their own life.
Adopting the trail name “The Keeper” from a group of supportive veterans he meets, George finds solace and encouragement in the “Hiker Universe.” This eclectic mix of hikers, civilians, and fellow military veterans provides him with a network of support and understanding. Despite this camaraderie, George’s internal battle with depression threatens to cloud his judgment as the days pass.
As he faces the physical and emotional challenges of the trail, George must summon the strength to conquer his demons, stay focused on his mission, and prove his resilience. “The Keeper” is a stirring depiction of one man’s journey to honor his fallen comrades and bring attention to a critical issue.
Along the way, he is given the trail name “The Keeper” (of the names). He finds support and comfort from fellow hikers, civilians, and military Veterans alike within the “Hiker Universe.” This adventurous subculture forms a network of individuals with a common purpose and an unspoken meaning of life that drives them down the trail and over the next peak.
From the outset, George encounters four distinctive military Veteran hikers—Michael Maclane, Haley Babula, Andrew Ferguson, and Nicholas Asad—who shadow his journey, motivate his efforts, and follow him from start to finish.
Despite the encouragement from fellow hikers and Veterans for his noble mission, George battles his depression, which threatens to cloud his judgment as he contemplates suicide along the trail.
With his darkness constantly looming, George fights a daily battle, struggling to prove his resilience, conquer his depression, and focus on the mission of completing the trail.
