An animated semi-autobiographical adventure fantasy that explores themes of life, death, and creation as a tribute to friendship, created by Hayao Miyazaki.

During the Pacific War in Tokyo, Mahito Maki’s mother, Hisako, dies in a hospital fire. Mahito’s father, Shoichi, who owns an aviation munitions plant, marries his deceased wife’s sister, Natsuko, and they move to her countryside property. Mahito, distant from the pregnant Natsuko, comes upon a strange gray heron that guides him to a locked tower, the final known whereabouts of Natsuko’s architect granduncle.

The Japanese voice cast comprises Soma Santoki, Masaki Suda, Ko Shibasaki, Aimyon, Yoshino Kimura, Takuya Kimura, Kaoru Kobayashi, and Shinobu Otake. The film is characterized as a sizeable, fanciful production. It centers around a young boy named Mahito Maki, living during the Pacific War. After his mother’s passing, he relocates to the countryside, where he stumbles into an abandoned tower. This discovery leads him into a fantastical realm where he encounters a talking grey heron.
