A struggling Hebrew man in 33 A.D. Jerusalem named Clarence and his companion Elijah lose a chariot race with Mary Magdalene and the money that would have come with winning because of obstacles including gypsies hurling darts at them and nearly driving over Benjamin, a beggar covered in filth.
Although Clarence loves Jedediah the Terrible’s sister Varinia, he owes money to the loan shark. Roman troops racially profile Clarence and Elijah for a theft they did not commit.
One day, Clarence, a marijuana user who pilfers honey wine from the Romans, smokes opium amid the bodies of other opium users floating in midair. Seeing the light above his head, he plans to use the ascent of Jesus Christ as leverage to become a pretend messiah, pay off his debt, and begin a life of grandeur. When he comes by to get baptized, John the Baptist slaps him for being a hypocrite.
“The Book of Clarence” offers a new perspective through a contemporary lens while guiding viewers through well-known biblical narratives in a colorful and thought-provoking manner. Each scene defines director Jeymes Samuel’s distinct vision, which brings these timeless stories to life with breathtaking sights, thundering music, and stirring performances.
