The Biden administration has launched an ambitious plan to combat the rising number of ‘Tranq’ overdose deaths. The prevalence of potent synthetic opioids, commonly referred to as ‘Tranq,’ has led to an alarming surge in fatal overdoses across the nation. Recognizing the urgent need for action, the Biden administration has devised a comprehensive strategy that focuses on prevention, treatment, and law enforcement to address this grave public health concern.
In an effort to prevent overdose deaths from the narcotic combination known as “tranq dope,” the Biden administration is addressing the rising use of fentanyl mixed with the animal tranquilizer xylazine, White House officials said on Tuesday. Within the next two years, it is intended to reduce overdose deaths caused by the combination by 15%.
The government is looking into how to schedule xylazine under the Controlled Substances Act “while simultaneously maintaining the legitimate supply of xylazine in veterinary medicine,” per the plan unveiled on Tuesday.
Synthetic opioids like fentanyl and carfentanil, generally known as “Tranq,” have recently invaded the illicit drug market. These drugs are substantially more strong than conventional opioids, which has resulted in an increase in overdose fatalities. ‘Tranq’ has a terrible effect on people from all walks of life and all sizes of towns, and it is felt throughout the nation. The Biden administration is taking a multifaceted strategy to address this pressing issue.
Preventative Measures
In recognition of the importance of addressing the underlying causes of drug addiction, the administration’s approach focuses a strong emphasis on prevention. The government wants to increase public awareness efforts to inform people about the risks associated with “Tranq” and to encourage healthcare professionals to provide prescriptions responsibly. The strategy also calls for putting into place research-based preventive programs in schools and supporting neighborhood-based projects that ensure drug-free settings.
Neera Tanden, a domestic policy adviser for the White House, stated at a Monday media briefing that “our goal is to get fentanyl combined with xylazine off our streets and out of our communities.”
