That Sinking Feeling. Five Missing in Titanic Submarine Exploration Trip Revealed

In the depths of the ocean, where the Titanic once met its tragic fate over a century ago, a new mystery has unfolded. A groundbreaking submarine, inspired by the legendary ship itself, has gone missing during an expedition to explore the haunting remnants of the world’s most famous maritime disaster. The disappearance of the Titanic submarine has captivated the world.

According to David Concannon, an advisor to OceanGate Expeditions, the deep-sea exploration business that owns the Titan, the carbon-fiber submersible had a 96-hour oxygen supply when it set sail at around 6 a.m. on Sunday. Then tragedy hit.

On Sunday, the small submarine’s communication was lost an hour and a half into its dive to the disaster site off the Canadian province of Newfoundland. At 9.45 am on Sunday morning, an hour, and 45 minutes into its 2-mile dive to the Titanic disaster, contact between the sub and its mothership, Polar Prince, was lost. The vessel lost communication with the outside world.

A massive search and rescue effort is underway and is covering about nine hundred miles.

The submersible can float to the ocean’s surface on its own even though it lacks a GPS system or locating beacon. The wreck of the Titanic is located 435 miles south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and the rescue attempt is being managed out of Boston, Massachusetts.

The voyage to see the Titanic is a very risky adventure. The Titanic submarine’s passengers were had to sign a release admitting the hazards of deep-sea diving, which may result in physical harm, mental anguish, or even death.

Who was onboard the Titan Submarine?

On board the ship is Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a former French Navy diver who has previously studied the Titanic. Hamish Harding, a British businessman; Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani businessman; Suleman, a teenage son of Shahzada Dawood; and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French explorer. According to the BBC, Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, the firm that runs the submarine, is also on board.

What could have gone wrong?

The status of the electrical system if still working, they would have some propulsion, but the window is closing. Ocean temperature is very cold at the depth of the ocean. A catastrophic failure of the vessel could have happened underwater. Something underwater could have prevented the sub from coming back to the service.

The coast guard is scanning the ocean surface. An ocean bottom search may not have started yet as it is very difficult to get down to the bottom of the ocean. When you go that deep, the vehicles are unmanned.  If the vessel was found it would have to be lifted up, and only opened at the surface. Sound travels far in the ocean, so they may be able to hear something.

The OceanGate exploration took a crew of five on the Titan submarine, a revolutionary carbon fiber and titanium submersible with a depth range of 4,000 meters that provides access to almost 50% of the world’s oceans. Titan ushers in a new era of crewed submersible exploration and is the only sub in the world that can take five crewmembers to these depths.
