Texas Tech brings plenty of momentum into play and puts its 25-game home court winning streak on the line when it hosts Nicholls State on Wednesday in Lubbock, Texas.
The Red Raiders (5-2) are coming off a 79-65 win at home over Georgetown in the Big East/Big 12 Battle on Nov. 30. All five Texas Tech starters scored in double figures in the victory, with Jaylon Tyson and De’Vion Harman leading the way with 18 points each and Daniel Batcho racking up 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Texas Tech was up by 23 points but had to fight off a Georgetown rally that brought the Hoyas to within a point deep in the second half.
“With new teams, young teams, adversity sets in, and it takes a team awhile to recover,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said. “We really had to win the game twice, but we came back through that adversity and fought through it. The guys really hung in there and, you know, kept their composure when it counted.”
The Red Raiders, whose losses this season have come at neutral sites to Creighton and Ohio State — both ranked teams — have not suffered back-to-back defeats in Adams’ two-year tenure on the South Plains.
The Colonels (3-4), who have won back-to-back Southland Conference regular-season championships, travel to Lubbock after wins over San Diego and, most recently, a 115-50 stroll past Champion Christian at home on Nov. 29.
Latrell Jones paced Nicholls State with a game-high 23 points to lead four teammates in double-figure scoring. Mekhi Collins added a career-high 19 points on 7 of 7 from the field, Micah Thomas had 15 points, Caleb Huffman produced a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Manny Littles tossed in 12 points in the win.
The Colonels’ losses this season have been to Arizona, Wyoming, BYU and UC Irvine, all on the road.
Texas Tech has captured all five of the previous games between the teams including an 89-46 victory in the most recent matchup in 2016 in Lubbock.
