Texas shuffling deck at point guard vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

Texas will experiment with lineup changes to try to build some consistency on both ends of the floor when it faces Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas.

The contest will be the Longhorns’ second in a four-game homestand against mid-major teams before Texas heads to Hawaii to play in the Maui Invitational.

Texas (1-1) captured the first of that quartet 97-60 against Lafayette on Saturday behind a balanced attack that recorded just 21 assists (on 33 made field goals) and committed only nine turnovers.

“It was way better — we did a good job of passing,” Texas guard Tramon Mark said. “We had some hiccups, of course. I think we are still getting better; we are still not even scratching the surface on our offense yet.”

Mark scored 16 points and Chendall Weaver added 15 to pace a balanced attack that produced the first victory for coach Sean Miller as the Longhorns’ coach.

Matas Vokietaitis collected 14 points and 11 rebounds for Texas, while Simeon Wilcher scored 12 points and Jordan Pope and Dailyn Swain each hit for 10 in the win.

Miller will make a change at point guard for Wednesday’s game, moving Pope into the role.

“Jordan will play a lion’s share of the minutes at the point guard position,” Miller said Monday. “Moving Tramon away from that and putting him in that scoring role could really free him up. Tramon is a terrific playmaker, and he could do a lot of things besides score, but what position he plays and how that works a lot of times puts him in either a better position to do that more often.”

Fairleigh Dickinson (0-2) will head to Austin after a 93-83 loss at St. Peter’s on Saturday.

Noah Melson led the Knights with 16 points, Taeshaud Jackson added 14 points and 13 rebounds, and David Jevtic hit for 14 points.

Wednesday’s game will be the third of four road contests to start the season for Fairleigh Dickinson, which already has played Iowa State.
