According to officials, Edward LeClair, a 57-year-old sexual offender who was on trial in Texas, passed away on Thursday after drinking from a large water bottle that was filled with a murky liquid as a jury found him guilty of child sexual assault. In Denton, about 40 miles northwest of Dallas, Edward LeClair was on trial for five counts involving a single victim.
The cause of his death and manner of death are not yet listed by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office. LeClair had been detained but later released on bond. The Denton County District Attorney’s Office’s First Assistant Attorney Jamie Beck stated that things had been normal up until that point. According to Denton County Jail, he was charged with five counts of child sexual assault against a single victim happened in 2016..
LeClair and his attorney had been waiting to hear the decision at the 16th District Court in Denton, Texas. LeClair, however, grabbed his bottle and “chugged” the cloudy liquid down as he was found guilty on the other four counts after learning that he had been found guilty on the first count.
After the verdicts were announced, LeClair was returned to a holding cell, but officers decided to check on him because of his unusual behavior. He was discovered unconscious and taken to Medical City Denton, where he was declared dead. Witnesses had reported that he had “gone grey.”
For the jury as well as the defence, prosecution, and judge–who had never encountered anything like this before–it was an unusual circumstance. Texas Rangers are looking into his cause of death, which has not yet been reported by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office. Analysis of the water bottle and its contents is ongoing.
