On Thursday evening, a Texas man was executed more than three decades after killing another man. The man said that false and unscientific expert testimony had caused a jury to pronounce a death sentence. The man had stabbed and robbed another man when that man had given him and his girlfriend a lift.
On Thursday evening, Brent Ray Brewer was given a lethal injection at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was pronounced dead at 6:39 p.m. local time. The 53-year-old Texan died about 15 minutes after the chemical pentobarbital was administered, according to Associated Press.
The outlet also reported Brewer was executed after a spiritual adviser stood next to him and said a brief prayer, to which he replied, Amen. He also told the warden that he wanted to make a final statement.
While family members of Laminack quietly watched through a window that was located a few feet away from him, Brewer said that he had no words to fix what he had broken. He said that he was no longer the reckless 19-year-old he had been and that he hoped that the family would “find peace” and that he meant it.
The outlet also reported that Laminack’s daughter Debra Corbin said that while Brent Ray Brewer had been in prison for over 33 years, their mother said that their family had also “been in prison for 33 years” and that they had “been released today.”
In 1990, Robert Laminack gave Brewer, who was 19 years old at the time, and his girlfriend a ride to a Salvation Army that was located in Amarillo. Laminack, who was 66 years old was stabbed by Brewer, who also robbed him of $140.
The U.S. Supreme Court declined to step in hours before he was executed. Brewer and his lawyers claimed that prosecutors had used the testimony of a false and discredited expert during his re-sentencing trial in 2009. He had also reportedly faced abuse when he was a child.
On Tuesday, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals dismissed an appeal as they said that the claim should have been raised earlier by the defendant.
On Tuesday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles unanimously voted against commuting his death sentence to a lesser penalty with a 7-0 vote. They also did not allow a six-month reprieve.
