Tesla is recalling almost all its vehicles in the U.S. due to defective software issues. Documents posted by a U.S. safety regulator show that an update in its Autopilot software is expected to fix a defective system in over two million vehicles. This system is supposed to make sure that drivers are paying attention when they use Autopilot with alerts and more.

The U.S. safety regulator posted documents on Wednesday for the recall of Tesla vehicles following a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The government agency was investigating a series of crashes that occurred when Tesla vehicles were driven using the partially automated Autopilot system. Some of these crashes were fatal and led to the loss of lives.

Tesla has recalled models Y, S, 3, and X. These electric vehicles from Tesla were manufactured between October 5, 2012, and December 7, 2023. The software upgrade started on Tuesday when certain vehicles were issued an “over-the-air software remedy. This is the fourth recall by Tesla in less than two years.

The NHTSA said that there might be an “increased risk of a crash” after drivers use Autosteer and do not “maintain responsibility for vehicle operation.”

The update would be different for each model and would include features such as adding controls and alerts to the Autosteer function. There could be more prominent visual alerts and additional checks when using Tesla on roadways, as well as when the electric vehicle is near traffic controls.

The agency also said that it would continue to monitor the updated software on Tesla. NHTSA also said that automated technology held “great promise for improving safety, but only when it is deployed responsibly.”

Tesla shares saw a small decline after the recall, but it is not expected to have a major fallout as recalls occur among almost all cars at some point in the automotive industry. Automakers generally have the financial capability to ensure that recalls are free.
