Tattoo Ink Contains Cancer-Causing Chemicals Here Are The Dangers You Need to Know

Despite up to three in ten Americans having tattoos, experts claim that the tattoo industry in the US is mainly unreported. A person having a tattoo is already in danger of getting an infection from bacteria since the skin is broken, or they could develop hepatitis B or C if the equipment is not cleaned thoroughly. Recipients may also grow nodules, granulomas, or scar tissue around the tattoo over time.

Nearly half of the tattoo inks used in the US may contain chemicals that cause cancer, a recent study says. 23 of the 56 common inks frequently used by American tattoo artists were found to contain potentially dangerous azo-compounds, according to State University of New York at Binghamton researchers who examined the inks.

Although azo compounds are not harmful when they are chemically intact, bacteria or UV radiation can break them down into a different compound that is harmful to health. According to the study’s principal author, John Swierk, very little is actually known about the composition of tattoo inks.” Unexpectedly, no dye company produces pigment specifically for tattoo ink, according to Swierk. Corporations produce pigments for all applications, including paint and textiles. The ink for tattoos contains these pigments as well.

A 2019 Statistica study found that 35% of people in the nation now had body art, up from 21% in 2012. Despite their widespread use, tattoos are considered cosmetic products in the US, which means that, for the most part, components do not require FDA approval before use.

Two components make up tattoo inks: a carrier solution and a pigment. The pigment could be a solid substance like titanium dioxide or a molecular molecule like a blue pigment. On the other hand, the carrier fluid delivers the pigment to the skin’s middle layer. The European Union put a ban on two widely used green and blue inks in January of this year after authorities alleged that they contained dangerous compounds.

Research has revealed the existence of other components that were not always indicated on the labels, in addition to the discovery of azo-compounds in 23 of the pigments. In one instance, ethanol was not specified, but a chemical test showed that it was there. Swierk and his team want to share the components and substances of tattoo inks. They intend to post the findings on their website What’s in My Ink after the study has undergone peer review so that anyone considering getting a tattoo will have access to them.
