Remco Evenepoel won Stage 5 on Wednesday as defending champion Tadej Pogacar seized the overall race leader’s yellow jersey at the Tour de France.

Belgium’s Evenepoel won this year’s first individual time trial, completing the 33-kilometer route on flat terrain in Caen in 36 minutes and 42 seconds.

Slovenia’s Pogacar placed second, 16 seconds behind, and Italy’s Edoardo Affini finished third.

Three-time champion Pogacar took the overall lead, followed by Evenepoel and France’s Kevin Vauquelin. Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands lost the yellow jersey and slipped to sixth place.

Matteo Jorgenson remains the leading American in the race in fifth place.

Stage 6 on Thursday is a hilly, 201.5-kilometer trek from Bayeux to Vire Normandie. International cycling’s premier 21-stage race will conclude on July 27 in Paris.
