On Thursday, Salt Lake County’s department of health announced that there were “alarming” rates of women in the county who have been diagnosed with syphilis. There has been an 800 percent increase in infections of women contracting sexually transmitted syphilis, according to reports by several outlets.
According to a report in Fox13 Now, Lynn Beltran, Epidemiology Supervisor for the Salt Lake County Health Department said that cases of syphilis used to be primarily found in men but cases are now been found in many women and women of childbearing age. When women of childbearing age get affected, this in turn could lead to children contracting the sexually transmitted disease in the womb.
According to the outlet, Lynn Beltran also said, “With babies who are born with congenital syphilis, that is a much more serious condition. The neurological damage that has occurred is most likely to be permanent. It can result in sudden death in some infants, or some babies may never leave the hospital.”
According to Fox13 Now, health officials reported the following numbers. From 2018 to 2022, syphilis cases among women in Salt Lake County saw an 800 percent increase, and 89 percent of these cases were among women who were in the ages of 15 to 44 years.
According to the outlet, officials also reported that there was a 65 percent overall increase in syphilis cases from 2018 to 2022, among all individuals in Salt Lake County, and not just women.
Syphilis cases are increasing across the nation according to national data released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It also said that cases increased as people were not tested for the disease early enough.
Syphilis is treatable with antibiotics. However, the longer it is left untreated the more dangerous it can become.
The CDC recommends regular testing as syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease. Testing should preferably be done depending on the number and frequency of sexual partners that a person has.
Beltran told KSL News Radio that it is important to normalize syphilis screening to ensure that people are actually getting screened for this STD.
She told the outlet, “If we ignore it, the outcomes are debilitating.”
