Eight people were shot to death at three different locations in Joliet, Illinois, over two days. A suspect for whom law enforcement agencies had carried out a manhunt was found dead more than a thousand miles away in Texas. The injured man, originally from Nigeria, lived in the U.S. for about three years. He was taken to an area hospital and died.
On Sunday at 4.27 p.m. Will County Sheriff’s office responded to a call to Pheasant Run Apartments. They found a man bleeding in the unincorporated Joliet Township off Pheasant Run Road. The county coroner’s office identified him as Toyosi I. Bakare. He was 28 years old and lived in Joliot.
Will County Sheriff’s Office set up surveillance at Acres Road as the registered owner of a red Camry lived there. The Camry had been spotted near the crime scene.
Will County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Dan Jungles also said that detectives walked to a house located on Acres Road and knocked on the door. There was no response. They moved across to another house whose residents they believed were related to those who lived in the first house.
Will County deputies entered the houses to look for the injured and found blood. Five people were found dead at a house located at 2225 W. Acres Road, and two people were found dead at 2212 W. Acres Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Monday morning, Joliet police announced a manhunt for Romeo Nance, the registered owner of the red Camry. The investigators said that he was armed as well as dangerous. He had prior arrest records and was out on bail.
On Monday, at around 8.30 p.m., Joliet police were informed that the U.S. Marshals had seen Nance at a Valero gas station in Natalia, Texas, about 1,200 miles away from Joliot. Joliot police said that they believed that Nance died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was confronted by law enforcement in Texas.
Residents in Joliot have been angry, speechless, and shocked about the horrific shootings that took place in the neighborhood that is close to the Ascension St. Joseph Hospital as well as the Joliet West High School.
