A suspect has been arrested after a young schoolteacher’s body was found stuffed in the trunk of a car. The incident had taken place on Wednesday after neighbors called authorities to put out a fire in their Quartz Hill neighborhood. The young victim found in the trunk was later identified as a schoolteacher. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department initially identified a person of interest on Wednesday and later arrested him on Thursday night for causing the death of the teacher.
The Los Angeles County Department arrested Matthew Switalski for causing the death of Veronica Aguilar. The 37-year-old man owned the house where the car was found burning and was reportedly dating the 27-year-old elementary school teacher.
Switalski was taken into custody after being found in Kern County, several miles away from the Los Angeles suburb where he lived, on Thursday night. The Los Angeles Times reported that he is being held on a bail of $10 million. It is not as yet known if he has entered a plea.
On Wednesday morning, at about 8.20 a.m., people in the Quartz Hill neighborhood heard a woman screaming. This was followed by an explosion. Firefighters responded to a call that there was a fire in a garage. Investigators found a body in the trunk of a car in the 41400 block of 38th West Street in Quartz Hill. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene but was not identified then.
Neighbors who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that the home was owned by Switalski who was thought to be the young teacher’s boyfriend. They also said that he had rented rooms to several people.
Veronica Aguilar was a graduate of UCLA. She was a teacher in a school near Lancaster. Her brother Juan Aguilar set up a GoFundMe page to help the family pay funeral expenses.
