It is not often that two famous Louis meet and when they do the end result is scintillating. French fashion house Louis Vuitton recently released its Cruise 2023 at one of the most iconic buildings designed by American architect Louis Kahn. The fashion show that had the sun as a guest of honor took place at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla California. Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s creative director celebrated the sun as his muse in his fashion collection.
Ghesquière said “The guest of honor for the show is the sun. The elements are invited.” He also that he had chosen the location for their Cruise 2023 fashion show as everything clicked when he saw the “strange harmony” in this iconic location. As the sun set over the Salk Institute, the Louis Vuitton cruise 2022 collection shimmered with its molten metallics as models sashayed down the makeshift runway, with the blue of the Pacific Ocean behind.
The models wore futuristic robes, sunglasses, coats, warrior style outfits and shoes that were made with a combination of materials that were both traditional and futuristic. Raw materials such as cotton, silk and wool were transformed with metallic sheens and shone brightly against the iconic architectural location. Other pieces in the collection included leather belts as well as silver skateboard monogrammed with LV.
Ghesquière is known for his obsession with sci-fi and the future. However, although the materials used in this particular collection were unique, it was difficult to gauge whether the materials were reminiscent of a long gone past or a much anticipated future. The materials under the sun’s rays sometimes looked like crystals instead of fabrics.
Some of the celebrities who graced the show included Emma Roberts in knee high boots who was happy to reunite with her Scream Queens co-star Billie Lourd who wore a short black shiny dress while Ana de Armas wore a simple yet chic outfit paired with knee high boots. Phoebe Dynevor, the celebrity known for her role in Bridgerton, looked almost like a diamond in her dress with vertical stripes. Miranda Kerr looked elegant while Léa Seydoux look bright and smart in her pantsuit and carried a contrasting handbag. Gemma Chan also wore knee high boots that contrasted with her black and white full sleeves dress. Renate Reinsve’s white shirt and pastel tie also contrasted with her knee length boots.
