A recent study has highlighted a concerning issue plaguing ordinary household bandages. Conducted by consumer blog Mamavation and Environment Health News, the study examined 40 different bandages from 18 brands and found detectable levels of per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in 26 of them. PFAS are commonly known as ‘forever chemicals,’ These findings raise serious concerns about the safety of using such bandages, especially on wounds where direct contact with the skin occurs.

The study found these harmful chemicals in some prominent brands, including Band-Aid, Curad, Care Science, and First Honey. PFAS have been linked to a myriad of negative health effects, including reduced immune system function, developmental issues, and decreased fertility. According to reports, they can raise the risk of thyroid cancer by about 56%. Organic fluorine, a strong indicator of PFAS presence, was detected in concentrations ranging from 11 parts per million to 328 ppm.

Scientist emeritus and former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Dr. Linda S. Birnbaum, expressed concern about the potential exposure of adults and children to PFAS through bandages when applied to open wounds. She emphasized the need to use PFAS-free materials in bandages.

Other studies have reportedly revealed that even when a person consumes food or drinks water contaminated with forever chemicals, PFAS can enter the bloodstream. They can then settle into healthy tissue and harm organs such as the kidneys and liver.

Scott Belcher, an associate professor specializing in the environmental and health effects of PFAS at North Carolina State University, highlighted the widespread use of fluoropolymers such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in bandages. PTFE contributes to the presence of organic fluorine. Consumers are urged to be vigilant and seek out PFAS-free alternatives to minimize exposure to these harmful chemicals.
