Starbucks employees are conducting a three-day strike at 100 locations. Workers at 100 unionized Starbucks outlets on strike today to protest the company’s failure to bargain a fair contract. The “Double Down Strike” by @SBWorkersUnited will continue throughout the weekend in most stores, notably at CEO Howard Schultz’s home store, the Seattle Roastery.
According to Starbucks Workers United, the labor union organizing the strike, over 1,000 baristas at 100 outlets plan to walk out. The walkout will be the longest in the year-long drive for unionization.
Starbucks Corporation (Nasdaq: SBUX) discourages unionization, claiming that working directly with employees improves the company’s performance. However, the corporation stated last month that it respects employees’ legally protected right to demonstrate. Last year, more than 264 of Starbucks’ 9,000 company-run locations in the United States have voted to unionize.
This is the biggest strike in Starbucks history. Over 1,000 baristas are expected to participate.
